Organic Beauty Talk: Why did you decide to go organic?
Kasey: In college, I was influenced by the growing organic and fair trade food movements on campus. I felt that buying organic food, knowing what was in my food and where it was coming from made me more knowledgeable about what I was eating. I majored in Environmental Studies and have always loved learning about the environment, sustainability and health. After landing my first job in New York City, I became obsessed with makeup but my skin suffered severely. That’s when I started reading ingredient lists, researching products and understanding what was really in my cosmetics. Reading No More Dirty Looks, organic beauty blogs and learning about the beauty industry gave me a new perspective on beauty, skincare and health.
OBT: How has going organic and non-toxic changed your skin, hair and overall health?
Kasey: Overall, my face looks and feels healthier. I’m more energized from the food I eat and from exercising regularly. My skin is not as dry as it was before I switched to organic and non-toxic products and I’ve noticed that my eczema and post-acne scars have subsided. My organic journey is still evolving but knowing that I’m eliminating the amount of toxins in my body and understanding the truth behind beauty and skincare products has been encouraging and empowering.
OBT: What have you learned most through the process?
Kasey: I’ve learned not to put my trust in whatever is sold on store shelves just because it’s mainstream and easily available. It’s so important to be mindful of the products we consume and the ingredients they contain. Taking time to understand ingredients and their benefits, the origin of products and what companies stand for make for healthier and more conscious purchasing decisions. I’ve also learned that being healthy doesn’t just include what you put on your body but also involves how you treat your body on the inside (diet, exercising, rest).
OBT: What are some of your organic and natural beauty must-haves?
Kasey: I enjoy using facial oils to soothe, moisturize and invigorate my skin and I also like experimenting with oils for my hair and body. I love Pai Skincare’s Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil and their cleanser has been a godsend for my skin. Coconut oil has been my newest must-have for a gentle, moisturizing eye-makeup remover. For makeup, I’m still discovering so many great brands but I like using products by RMS Beauty, 100% Pure, ILIA Beauty and W3LL People. My everyday beauty must-haves are always some lipstick, blush or bronzer and mascara.
OBT: What has been your most difficult organic beauty product to find?
Kasey: I have very fine and finicky hair, so I’m still in search of the perfect, affordable organic shampoo and conditioner that won’t make me too oily.
OBT: How has Organic Beauty Talk helped you in your journey?
Kasey: When I started my organic beauty journey, Organic Beauty Talk was (and still is) one of my favorite sites to read. No detail goes unmentioned and is a great resource for information, research and reviews. I love how informative, useful and hip OBT is!
OBT: Anything else you’d like to add?
Kasey: It’s never too late to become educated about health, product ingredients and sustainability. I hope more women will take charge of their health and realize that beauty is not just skin deep.
Thank you Kasey! xx
