Ingredient Spotlight: Marshmallow Root
Marshmallow root was widely used in traditional Greek medicine (there are references to marshmallow root in Homer’s Iliad) and it is still exceedingly popular today in a multitude of homeopathic remedies. So what’s responsible for this enduring love? It can likely be attributed to marshmallow root’s many healing properties. When taken internally, marshmallow root acts as a diuretic and also soothes coughs and sore throats. Externally, marshmallow root acts as an anti-inflammatory and helps treat irritations, burns, and sores. The very same inflammation-minimizing properties also reduce skin degeneration and cell oxidation, both of which lead to premature aging. But the youth inducing benefits don’t stop there – marshmallow root also supports hyaluronic acid levels, which boost moisture content resulting in softer, smoother skin. Pretty impressive.
Here are some of my marshmallow root containing favorites:
May Lindstrom The Problem Solver – I am literally wearing this mask as I type this. I love everything about it and for this reason I will forever consider it a staple in my routine. It cleans, detoxifies, and exfoliates with virtually no irritation (thank you marshmallow root!) I think May said it best when she described this mask as a “hero. over-achiever. superstar.” (Marshmallow root is also found in May’s The Clean Dirt. I could write pages detailing my love for this product. Just know that it’s perfect and your life would be better with The Clean Dirt in it.)
La Bella Figura Rainforest Hydration Treatment – This rich cream/balm hybrid is unlike any moisturizer I have tried before. With ingredients like marshmallow root, sacha inchi oil, mango seed butter, and illipe butter, this magical “modern balm” manages to treat parched, dehydrated skin in a single application. And it accomplishes this without leaving an oily residue behind. Miraculous.
De Mamiel Brightening Cleanse & Exfoliate – Sampling this product was one of the highlights of my year. Not only do I find this exfoliator gentle enough to use on a daily basis (no small feat for my sensitive skin), but reading the ingredient list consistently brings a smile to my face. French pink clay, buttermilk powder, pearl powder, marshmallow root—this exfoliator is overflowing with unique, inspiring ingredients. Another staple.
Pollen & Wax Province Complexion Clay – This beautiful mask is carrying me through an extremely unsettling bout of hormonal acne. It marries powerful French green clay with soothing marshmallow root to minimize irritation while it works to pull gunk from deep within pores. This mask is nothing short of a miracle worker in my humble opinion.
